“Spring work is going on with joyful enthusiasm.”

Soap Box Moment
Let’s take a moment to talk about ugly food. It is estimated that one third of all food produced in the world never makes it to the consumer due to its appearance at an estimated cost of $400 billion annually.
Why? We have been conditioned over the past few decades to expect perfection in our food. We have chosen appearance and shelf stability over flavor.
Food that is blemished, misshapen or bruised is rejected by grocers and restaurants and is thrown away. To combat this wasteful practice multiple campaigns such as Taste, Not Waste and Inglorious Fruit & Vegetables are bringing light to this under exposed issue. A handful of large food chains such as Whole Foods have announced they will join in the movement by selling ugly foods at their stores. Its not a mainstream idea by any means but every little bit helps.
Call it wonky, call it inglorious, call it ugly – just don’t call it waste. These fruits and veggies are just as good as their blemish free brethren.
Around the Farm
We hope you all had an enjoyable weekend. We know we took advantage of our extended weekend and spent it with our loved ones. This week we are wrapping up planting our peppers, eggplant, melon and other warm weather crops. Your basket will include lettuce, radishes, chives and oregano.
